massachusetts, the key race of the year, scott brown has 48%. elizabeth warren, the democrat, is beating him by over 31,000 votes but only 23% reporting. virginia, look at this. this is so close. 51% to 49%. 46% reporting. again, just a reminder, this is the democratic seat that republicans really want to capture, george allen in particular wants his old seat back. he was defeated six years ago. >> so far does this affect the balance of power? >> it doesn't but look at what we have here. this is a good indicator of how close things are. 41 republican seats, 41 democratic seats. again, we want to remind our viewers these purple seats here reflect the independent senators. bernie sanders from vermont caucuses with the democrats. the newly elected senator from maine, angus king, is here. we put him towards the middle. the white seats are the ones we don't have projections yet. again, nobody has the 51 needed for an outright majority in the senate. >> obviously we're watching the numbers in colorado very closely. let's go to you for that, wolf. >> l

sherrod brown the democratic incumbent in ohio, he will go on to win re-election. same goes for claire mccaskill. she is beating todd akin, who very famously talked about rape and abortion that had the entire republican party on him to get out of the race. didn't happen. claire mccaskill will win. this means it is now mathematically impossible for republicans to retake the senate, even if mitt romney wins the white house which would put paul ryan in a position of being the tie tie-breaking vote. a lot of really depressed republicans. orrin hatch from utah is going to win re-election, fended off a primary earlier this year from within his own party. mathematically impossible, but the way it works, every single senator has a really big role, so all of the races are still very interesting, including virginia, again, look how close this is. republican, george allen is ahead right now with 65% reporting, ahead by about 33,000 votes -- actually fewer than 33,000 points. they hope republicans pick this up still. north dakota, same thing. open seat. we haven't talked about

the incumbent republican scott brown up against his democratic challenger, elizabeth warren. only 5% reporting at this point. she's about 5,000 votes ahead. in indiana, we're still watching this, just changing as we watch it. joe donnelly still ahead with almost 50% reporting. this is a seat that if republicans lose, it is an early tell-tale sign they are not going to be able to retake control of the senate. let's look at the balance of power at this hour. >> right now, 38 republican seats, 37 democratic seats. you see these two purple seats right here, for the two independents. one is for bernie sanders of vermont who won re-election tonight. the other is more towards the middle. that's because that's angus king, the newly elected independent senator of maine. all of these white seats in the middle are still those that are outstanding, those that are up for re-election right now. of course, still, neither has even close to the 51 needed to have the full-out majority of the senate. >> a lot of races to find out about. thanks very much. we will check in with our analysts. van
